О судьбе Маленького Домика, который и является главным героем книги. Однажды его построили, и был произнесен завет: этот домик будет стоять долго-долго и в нем будут жить правнуки наших правнуков.
Домик встречает лето и зиму, утро и ночь, радуется распустившимся цветам яблони и первым снежинкам, он наблюдает жизнь людей, которые в нем живут. Но со временем на тихую деревенскую жизнь начинает наступать город. Он все ближе и ближе, и вот уже Маленький Домик оказывается в самом его центре, окруженный небоскребами, ревущими электричками, грохочущими трамваями и спешащими людьми. Хозяева его давно покинули.
Трагедия заключается в том, что сумасшедший ритм города никак не может быть принят Домиком. Та ритмическая жизнь, согласная с природой уже не доступна ему. И хозяева его давно бросили. Домик обветшал.
Дальше случается невероятное. И в конце истории Домик переезжает на столь милую ему поляну с ромашками и яблонями, и возвращается к своему естественному ритму жизни.
