Настоящая книга посвящена рассмотрению принципов исследования и описания звуковой стороны языка. Рассматриваются основные теоретические направления и подходы к изучению фонетической системы языка. Ставятся и решаются вопросы соотношения фонетики и фонологии, анализируется проблема определения фонемы, принципы описания фонемной синтагматики и морфонологии, систематизируются функции силлабической и акцентно-ритмической структуры слова; особое внимание уделяется проблеме фонетического и фонологического варьирования. Дается определение фонемы, аллофона, репрезентанта фонемы и слога. Обосновывается и разрабатывается оригинальная концепция фонетической структуры слова, представляющей собой единство его фонемной структуры, фонотактической структуры, силлабической и акцентно-ритмической структуры.
