В том вошли фундаментальные монографии и небольшие работы, значимость которых в научном наследии Э. С. Маркаряна весьма высока. Именно в этих работах были заложены основы отечественной культурологии как самостоятельной интегративной дисциплины, обладающей особым статусом в структуре гуманитарных наук. В работах ученого был выявлен и проанализирован не только теоретический, но и практический потенциал интегральных знаний об обществе и мире культуры, намечены перспективы перехода от технократически ориентированного типа развития человечества к гуманистически направленному типу нацеленному на его самосохранение.
