Эта книга, рассказывающая о путях становления Опричнины, имеет не случайное название — "Драма русской истории". Оно, по мысли автора, указывает на относительно сложный и длительный характер предыстории этого учреждения. Вот почему нельзя согласиться с теми историками, которые искусственно укорачивают время формирования исторических предпосылок введения царем Иваном IV Опричнины. Так, Р.Г.Скрынников, известный знаток эпохи Ивана Грозного, заявляет: "Только всестороннее исследование политического развития Российского государства во второй половине XVI в. позволит дать обоснованный ответ на вопрос о сущности репрессивного режима опричнины и значении террора с точки зрения исторических судеб страны". Верно то, что без исследования политического развития России во второй половине XVI века невозможно понять суть Опричнины. Однако данное исследование, даже всестороннее, не способно предложить мотивированный ответ на вопрос, чем обусловливалось и какие исторические задачи решало установление названного института, не способно потому, что события, приведшие к Опричнине, возникли еще во времена Ивана III, причем не только и не столько в сфере сугубо политической, сколько в сфере религиозно-политической. Поэтому надо помнить, что появлению Опричнины предшествовал достаточно долгий период религиозно-политического развития, начавшийся в конце XV века с появлением на Руси ереси "жидовствующих" и завершившийся в середине 60-х годов XVI века учреждением Опричнины. Перед нами единый и цельный, насчитывающий многие десятилетия, период, не подлежащий с точки зрения интересов исследования хронологическому делению.

Verno to, chto bez issledovaniya politicheskogo razvitiya Rossii vo vtoroy polovine XVI veka nevozmozhno ponyat sut Oprichniny. Odnako dannoe issledovanie, dazhe vsestoronnee, ne sposobno predlozhit motivirovannyy otvet na vopros, chem obuslovlivalos i kakie istoricheskie zadachi reshalo ustanovlenie nazvannogo instituta, ne sposobno potomu, chto sobytiya, privedshie k Oprichnine, voznikli eshche vo vremena Ivana III, prichem ne tolko i ne stolko v sfere sugubo politicheskoy, skolko v sfere religiozno-politicheskoy. Poetomu nado pomnit, chto poyavleniyu Oprichniny predshestvoval dostatochno dolgiy period religiozno-politicheskogo razvitiya, nachavshiysya v kontse XV veka s poyavleniem na Rusi eresi "zhidovstvuyushchikh" i zavershivshiysya v seredine 60-kh godov XVI veka uchrezhdeniem Oprichniny. Pered nami edinyy i tselnyy, naschityvayushchiy mnogie desyatiletiya, period, ne podlezhashchiy s tochki zreniya interesov issledovaniya khronologicheskomu deleniyu.
This book, which tells about the ways of formation of the Oprichnina, is not a random name — "drama of Russian history". It is, according to the author, indicates a relatively complex and lengthy nature of the history of this institution. That is why it is impossible to agree with those historians who artificially shorten the time of formation of the historical background of the introduction of Tsar Ivan IV Oprichnina. So, R. G. Skrynnikov, a well-known connoisseur of the epoch of Ivan the terrible, said: "Only a comprehensive study of the political development of the Russian state in the second half of the XVI century, will give a reasonable answer to the question about the nature of the repressive regime of the oprichnina and the value of terror, in terms of historical destinies of the country." It is true that without the study of the political development of Russia in the second half of the XVI century it is impossible to understand the essence of the Oprichnina. However, this study, even full, fails to offer a reasoned response to the question of what is due and what historical problems solved in the establishment of the same Institute, are not able because of the events that led to the Oprichnina, there were during the reign of Ivan III, and not only in the sphere of purely political but religious-political. Therefore, we must remember that the appearance of the Oprichnina was preceded by long enough period of religious-political development, which began in the late fifteenth century with the emergence in Russia of heresy "Judaizers" and ended in the mid 60-ies of the XVI century with the establishment of the Oprichnina. Before us is a single whole, comprising many decades, a period that may not be from the point of view of the interests of the research chronological division.
