Второй том новой научной серии "Острова и архипелаги Российской Арктики" посвящен историко-культурному наследию и природной среде арктического острова Вайгач. Издревле он получил у ненецкого народа название "Хэбидя Я", что в переводе на русский означает "Священная Земля". В истории неизвестен остров, подобный Вайгачу, на котором более тысячелетия находились главные святилища сменявших друг друга народов Севера (в том числе легендарных морских охотников - сихиртя и самоедов /ненцев/), и все это время на нем никто постоянно не жил, а паломничество к нему осуществлялось в экстремальных условиях с громадной по своей площади и расстояниям территории Европейского Севера и Западной Сибири на протяжении многих столетий и вплоть до 20-х годов 20-го века. В 16 веке, когда на острове действовали еще святилища легендарных арктических народов, он был хорошо известен и русским поморам.
С изучением острова связаны имена выдающихся русских и зарубежных мореплавателей и первопроходцев. В 1933-1936 гг. здесь работали вольнонаемные и заключенные "Вайгачской экспедиции ОГПУ".
В основу тома положены многолетние исследования Морской арктической комплексной экспедиции (МАКЭ Фонда полярных исследований и Российского научно-исследовательского института культурного и природного наследия имени Д.С. Лихачёва) под руководством П.В. Боярского на острове, в архивах, библиотеках и музеях, начатые в 1986 году и с небольшими перерывами продолжавшиеся вплоть до 2011 года. В описании природной среды Вайгача приняли участие не только сотрудники МАКЭ, но и ведущие специалисты-исследователи из научных и профильных учреждений России. Издание предназначено для широкого круга ученых, занимающихся проблемами Арктики. Оно может быть использовано в качестве пособия для студентов высших учебных заведений и аспирантов.
