Художник Амшей Нюренберг (1887-1979) родился в Елисаветграде. В 1911 году, окончив Одесское художественное училище, он отправился в Париж, где в течение года делил ателье с М. Шагалом, общался с представителями европейского авангарда. Вернувшись на родину, переехал в Москву, где сотрудничал в "Окнах Роста" и сблизился с группой "Бубновый валет". В конце жизни А. Нюренберг работал над мемуарами, которые посвящены его жизни в Париже, французскому искусству того времени и сохранили свежесть первых впечатлений и остроту оценок. Литературное наследие художника включает также воспоминания, эссе и очерки советской художественной культуры середины ХХ столетия.
