Otkryvaya vecher, na kotorom prisutstvovalo mnogo immigrantov iz byvshego SSSR, vedushchaya soobshchila, chto v zale nakhoditsya sozdatel i glavnyy rezhisser Kamernogo evreyskogo muzykalnogo teatra YUriy SHerling, to est ya. I dvukhtysyachnyy zal vstal. Zriteli aplodismentami zastavili podnyatsya na stsenu. Poblagodariv ikh za pamyat, ya sel k royalyu i, akkompaniruya sebe, spel kompozitsiyu iz starykh evreyskikh pesen. Pel by eshche i eshche, no slezy dushili: bez malogo chetvert veka minulo s togo dnya, kogda posle moego izgnaniya iz teatra on vskore dukhovno, a zatem i fizicheski umer, no lyudi prodolzhali pomnit o nem. V antrakte zriteli okruzhili menya. A molodye, nikogda ne videvshie nashikh spektakley i znavshie o nikh lish ot starshikh, interesovalis, gde mozhno prochitat o teatre, ego spektaklyakh, artistakh... Nigde! I ya ponyal, chto rasskazat ob etom teatre, sokhranit v istorii istinnyy podvig ego kollektiva v temnye vremena sovetskogo totalnogo antisemitizma, kogda tvorcheskaya individualnost byla strozhayshim tabu, o lyudyakh, perezhivshikh odinochestvo v tolpe, moy svyashchennyy dolg. I ya reshil ispolnit ego, napisav etu knigu.

Last autumn, during a business trip to new York I was invited to the new year (on the Jewish calendar) the festival theater hall in the Millennium. Opening the evening, which was attended by many immigrants from the former Soviet Union, the presenter said that the hall is the founder and chief Director of the Chamber Jewish musical theatre Yury Sherling, that is me. Two-thousand and audience stood up. The audience applause was forced to climb on stage. Thanking them for the memory, I sat down to the piano and, accompanying himself, sang a song of old Jewish songs. He sang again and again, but tears choked: almost a quarter of a century has passed since the day when, after my expulsion from the theatre, he soon spiritually and then physically died, but people continued to remember him. During the intermission, the audience surrounded me. Asked about my life, family, lamented the fact that to revive the theater failed. Talked about the invaluable role played by his performances in their fight with the Soviet authorities for a free, decent life, the right to choose their country of residence. And the young who have never seen our performances and knew about them only from the elder, wondered where you can read about the theatre, its plays, actors... Anywhere! And I realized that to tell about it, save in the history of the true feat of his team in the dark days of the Soviet total-Semitism, when artistic individuality was strictly taboo, on the survivors "lonely in the crowd" is my sacred duty. And I decided to fulfill it by writing this book.
