Алексей Алексеевич Харламов (1840-1925), талантливый портретист, писал чаще всего красивые "головки" итальянок и цыганок. Кто-то говорил, что это потому, что "конкретных" портретов ему почти не заказывали. Однако именно абстрактные "головки" прославили художника, благодаря им он получил звание академика, и он не видел необходимости менять свои художнические пристрастия. Выходец из крестьянской семьи, Харламов большую часть жизни прожил в Париже. Там он подружился с Тургеневым, и это способствовало росту его популярности. Он даже проиллюстрировал "Дворянское гнездо" великого писателя. Когда мода на "головки" прошла, художник обеднел, жил едва ли не в полном одиночестве. Искусствоведы считают, что А.А. Харламов по-своему способствовал росту престижа русской живописи.

Alexei Kharlamov (1840-1925), a talented portrait painter, wrote often beautiful heads, Italians and Roma. Someone said that this is because "specific" portraits of him almost didn't order. The son of a peasant family, Kharlamov a large part of his life in Paris. There he made friends with Turgenev, and this helped increase its popularity. Kharlamov in their own way contributed to the growth of prestige of Russian painting.
