Повесть "Яма" А. И. Куприн начал писать в 1909 году и завершил работу через шесть лет. Книга о жизни проституток вызвала скорее осуждение, чем сочувствие или понимание. Автора обвиняли в безнравственности и чрезмерном натурализме. Резко негативным было отношение к повести Л. Н. Толстого (кстати, автора скандальной "Крейцеровой сонаты"), который так и не смог дочитать ее до конца: "отвратительно", "грубость циническая", "это мерзость", "так гадко". И словно в пику Толстому один из героев "Ямы" говорит: "…Наши художники слова - самые совестливые и самые искренние во всем мире художники - почему-то до сих пор обходили проституцию и публичный дом. Почему? Право, мне трудно ответить на это. <…> Может быть, у них не хватает ни времени, ни самоотверженности, ни самообладания вникнуть с головой в эту жизнь и подсмотреть ее близко, без предубеждения, без громких фраз, без овечьей жалости, во всей ее чудовищной простоте и будничной деловитости. Ах, какая бы это получилась громадная, потрясающая и правдивая книга". Куприн сумел создать книгу, действительно потрясающую своей правдивостью, и посвятил ее матерям и юношеству.
