English jokes and idioms --- proverbs, sayings, parables, toasts, anecdotes, aphorisms from celebrities and unknown authors, with Russian translation-equivalents are helpful to English-language learners (and English speakers mastering the Russian language) giving them a deeper insight into the very core of the language, uncovering the rules of creation and usage of the famous English humor by comparing them with the Russian analogues. Vigorous English style, be it a business talk, statesmen’s speeches, or even an epitaph, cannot do without irony; one cannot catch the idea without seizing the point of humor. The author shows the very “atoms” of the vigorous English style --- idioms and some slang phrases with their Russian equivalents, as well as expressions borrowed by European languages from Latin. Following the issue of the same author’s “Anatomy of Humor” presenting the system analysis of Russian humor the new book systematizes the wealth of English humor. The book is addressed some more to those who strive for complying with the spirit of the English language rather than with its “letter”, for understanding of its though faint but everlasting humor, irony and sarcasm of every dialogue.
