Книга посвящена анализу бытия субъекта. Субъект рассматривается в аспекте его различных отношений, прежде всего к Другим. Показано, как при формировании субъекта Другие создают важнейшие структуры его субъектности. В этой связи центральную роль играет такая структура, как горизонт потенциальности сознания, который выводит субъекта из точки здесь-и-сейчас к возможности построения проектов, замыслов и управления собственным мышлением и бытием. В формировании горизонта потенциальности играют важнейшую роль совместное внимание и указательный жест. Субъект является со-творцом интерсубъективной сферы, в которую он входит благодаря актам учреждения смысла, которые имеют триадический характер ("на смысл предмета субъекту указывают Другие"). Собственная изначальная вторичность субъекта дана ему непосредственно, в виде памяти о триадической структуре учредительных актов смысла.
Уровень бытия субъекта не всегда одинаков, но может возрастать и падать. Высокий уровень бытия обуславливает максимальную раскрытость к миру, яркое восприятие и высокий контроль своих действий. При падении уровня бытия мир закрывается перед бытием субъекта и бытие закрывается перед миром. Центральное понятие книги --- адекватность. Адекватность определяется как такое "неискаженное" состояние субъектных структур, которое позволяет субъекту иметь максимальное количество бытия. Анализируется отношение к Другим субъекта со сниженным уровнем бытия и роль в этом суггестии. Чтобы быть свободным от патологического влияния социума, субъект должен сформировать у себя адекватные отношения к Другим в тесной связи с адекватным формированием остальных отношений.
