Дневник 1950-х годов запечатлел бурные, драматические события и в жизни страны, и в жизни автора дневника: смерть Сталина, ХХ съезд партии, назначение Твардовского главным редактором "Нового мира" (1950), перестройку журнала, первый разгон его редакции в 1954 году, запрещение поэмы "Теркин на том свете", начало "оттепели"… С предельной искренностью здесь рассказано о непростых отношениях поэта с А. Фадеевым, их противоречивом развитии и трагическом завершении. Неожиданные штрихи к портрету Хрущева содержат записи, сделанные поэтом непосредственно после многочасовых встреч и бесед с тогдашним руководителем государства. Немало страниц дневника посвящено дружбе с М. Исаковским, С. Маршаком, Э. Казакевичем.

Diary 1950-ies captures the turbulent and dramatic events in the life of the country, and in the life of the author of the diary: Stalin's death, the twentieth Congress of the party, the appointment of Tvardovsky, the chief editor of the "New world" (1950), the restructuring of the magazine, the first dispersal of its revision in 1954, the prohibition of the poem "Terkin in the next world", the beginning of the "thaw"... With the utmost sincerity here talked about the difficult relationship of the poet Alexander Fadeev, their contradictory development and tragic end. Unexpected touches to the portrait of Khrushchev contain recordings made by the poet directly after hours of meetings and conversations with the then head of state. Many pages of the diary is devoted to the friendship with Isakovsky M., S. Marshak, E. Kazakevich.
