Большинство эссе были написаны Бродским по-английски и лишь «Поэт и проза» — на русском. Ряд переводов был авторизован и опубликован еще при жизни автора. В настоящем издании представлен также новый перевод эссе «Дитя цивилизации», выполненный известным переводчиком; Максимом Немцовым.

Bolshinstvo esse byli napisany Brodskim po-angliyski i lish Poet i proza na russkom. Ryad perevodov byl avtorizovan i opublikovan eshche pri zhizni avtora. V nastoyashchem izdanii predstavlen takzhe novyy perevod esse Ditya tsivilizatsii, vypolnennyy izvestnym perevodchikom; Maksimom Nemtsovym.

The collection includes an essay by Joseph Brodsky (1940-1996), dedicated to the history of Russian literature. In these texts the poet, playwright, Nobel laureate drawn to the work of his great fellow among which Batyushkov, Dostoevsky, Mandelstam, Tsvetaeva, Akhmatova, and others. Most of the essays were written by Brodsky in English, and only "a Poet and prose" — in Russian. A number of translations were authorized and published during the life of the author. This publication presents also a new translation of the essay "the Child of civilization", made famous by the translator; Maxim Nemtsov.
