В романе отражен сложный период отечественной истории, связанный с формированием Мурманской железной дороги и формированием флотилии Северного Ледовитого океана, из которого позже родился героический Северный флот. Русский крейсер "Аскольд" начал боевую службу в Дарданелльской операции, а вошел в революцию кораблем Северной флотилии. Большая часть романа посвящена борьбе с иностранной интервенцией на Мурмане, в Архангельске, в Карелии.
За роман "Из тупика" Валентин Пикуль был удостоен литературной премии Министерства обороны СССР за 1987 год.

In the novel reflected the difficult period of the Russian history, associated with the formation of the Murmansk railway and the formation of the flotilla of the Arctic ocean, which later was born the heroic Northern fleet. Russian cruiser "Askold" began active service in the Dardanelles operation, and entered the revolution ship of the Northern fleet. A large part of the novel deals with the struggle against foreign intervention in Murmansk, Arkhangelsk, Karelia.
For the novel "the impasse" Valentin Pikul was awarded the literary prize of the Ministry of defense of the USSR in 1987.
