Современник и сподвижник знаменитого кардинала Ришелье, Антуан де Вилль принимал участие во многих военных кампаниях и осадах своего времени, внес крупный вклад в развитие фортификационной науки и военно-инженерной мысли в целом, а некоторые аспекты его литературного и научного наследия (например, Трактат о малой войне) сохранили известную актуальность до наших дней.
