Роман Цви Прейгерзона (1900 – 1969) «Когда погаснет лампада» повествует о жизни евреев — до и после Великой Отечественной войны — в украинском городке Гадяч. На кладбище городка похоронен основоположник Хабада, Шнеур-Залман из Ляд. На его могиле поддерживается Вечный огонь, непотухающий более ста лет — символ еврейской традиции и культуры. Когда во время оккупации немцами и украинскими полицаями были уничтожены евреи городка, погас и светильник. В конце романа звучит тема Сиона — страны, где евреи могут быть свободны и независимы.
