Эта монография является попыткой выявить единую логику развертывания модерна как историко-рефлексивного процесса. По этой логике, с одной стороны, каждую из исторических систем мира можно выразить в виде предельной теории и множества предельных теорий (философий). С другой стороны, это означает, что каждую предельную теорию можно и нужно рассматривать как явный или неявный проект мира, который так или иначе реализуется в истории. Третьей стороной этого процесса является условная логика социально-системного существования человека, которая лежит по ту сторону предельного теоретизирования. Автор рассматривает модерн как ту фазу европейской истории, которая, с одной стороны, является реализационной критикой средневековой системы мира, выявляет и освобождает изначальный христианский универсалистский этический проект от его религиозно-системной реализации. Так формируется просвещенческий идеал. С другой стороны, реализация этого идеала приводит к новому его совмещению с логикой социально-системного существования. Драматизм этого процесса ставится автором в центр логики модерна.
В качестве центральной идеи модерна автор ставит проект «открытого» универсума, который выражается в своих проекциях в виде «открытого» общества и «открытой» природы. Логика развертывания историко-рефлексивного процесса модерна описывается как формирование, реализация и критика проекта «открытого» универсума. Все фундаментальные стороны модерна (либеральная, наукогенная и техногенная) рассматриваются как стратегически зависящие от логики развертывания «отрытого» универсума.
Как особая тема автором рассматривается логика контр-модерна, которая в своем критическом аспекте акцентирует отрицательные стороны модерновой «открытости», а в позитивном аспекте предлагает попытки возврата к новым версиям «закрытого» универсума. Отдельно автор рассматривает тот вариант контр-модерна, который можно назвать неконструктивным и который состоит в стремлении не видеть позитива модерна.
Взаимоопределенность логик до-модерна, модерна, контр-модерна и пост-модерна, их связанность с логикой социально-системного существования составляют тот особый драматизм развертывания модерна, который автор старается передать.
