С общекультурных позиций рассмотрены исторические обстоятельства возникновения и становления физики XX века. Выявлены социально-психологические истоки ее некоторых сомнительных черт. Проведен лексический анализ физических текстов. Сопоставлены доктрины и методологические подходы современной физики и науки прошлого. Сделан вывод о том, что новая физика представляет собой аналог позитивистской науки эллинов. Намечен путь эволюции физического знания в следующем, XXI столетии.
