Волею современных авторов институтки то и дело оказываются в эпицентре интриг, их похищают гусары, из-за них стреляются на дуэлях и кончают жизнь самоубийством. Действительность же была совершенно иной - но не менее интересной. В этой книге слово предоставлено самим "благородным девицам": здесь собраны наиболее интересные мемуарные свидетельства - подлинные истории женских институтов, существовавших в разных городах России на протяжении более 250 лет. Среди их авторов как достаточно громкие имена, так и совершенно безвестные, о которых, по сути, мы знаем только то, что сказано о себе ими самими. Институтки в деталях описывают быт, занятия и традиции своих "alma mater". С момента первой публикации подавляющего большинства воспоминаний, вошедших в книгу, прошло более ста лет. С тех пор они никогда более не перепечатывались, тем более не собирались под одной обложкой.
