В настоящей монографии рассматривается проблема взаимодействия литературы ХIХ в. и народознания (фольклористики, этнографии, истории), определявшего, с одной стороны, расширение проблематики русской художественной словесности, сам характер этой проблематики, а с другой --- становление, трансформацию и развитие ее жанровых форм.
Основное внимание уделено исследованию конкретного материала --- того "фундамента", той "почвы" из реальных фондов и знаний о жизни народа, ставших питательной основой русской литературы, на которой возросло ее величественное здание, создававшееся усилиями многих работников культуры, в том числе и так называемых "второстепенных писателей", которые впоследствии оказались в тени великих и прославленных гениев.
