"Я никогда не вел дневника. Первый опыт воспоминаний, или мемуаров, мною был использован летом 1906 г., когда я написал историю моего министерства с октября 1905 г. по конец апреля 1906 г. Я читал выдержки из этого писания В. В. Стасову, которому они так понравились, что он настоятельно потребовал от меня, чтобы я вел дневник. Я имел слабость обещать, а поэтому с 19 сент[ября] начал исполнять это обещание, имея в виду, что, не будучи обременен официальными обязанностями, пользуюсь сравнительно большим количеством свободного времени. Если втянусь, буду продолжать; если нет — брошу. Поживем — увидим."

Stasov, who liked them so much that he insisted that I kept a diary. I had the weakness to promise, and therefore 19 St[vember] started to fulfill this promise, having in mind that, not being burdened by official duties, are comparatively large amount of free time. If retracted, will continue; if not — throw. Let's wait and see."
